From the wards to the reporting room
A practical route into UK clinical radiology ST1 for foundation doctors, IMT trainees and SHOs — portfolio, MSRA, audits, taster weeks and interview prep in one place.
Who this is for
- FY1 / FY2 doctors exploring radiology before applying
- IMT, GP and surgical trainees considering a switch
- International medical graduates planning their UK route
Why radiology?
- Growing specialty — RCR workforce census shows persistent consultant shortages
- Strong subspecialty choice: neuro, IR, paeds, breast, MSK, oncology
- Excellent work–life balance compared to most acute medical specialties
- Increasing scope for academic, AI and innovation work
Four steps from where you are now
- 1
Build the portfolio
Audit + QI in imaging, teaching sessions, a taster week, posters/presentations and at least one radiology-themed publication or case report.
- 2
Hit MSRA strong
Plan a 12-week MSRA window. Use Passmedicine + MSRA-specific banks. Aim to keep clinical scores high — radiology weights both papers.
- 3
Taster weeks & e-portfolio
Use your study leave for at least two taster weeks in different departments. Log structured reflections in Horus / NHS e-portfolio.
- 4
ST1 interviews
Practice the commitment to specialty, structured anatomy, image interpretation and ethics stations — use our interview simulator and shortlisting coach.
