NHS radiography careers by modality and band

Pick a modality and a band to see what the role pays, what NHS panels score on the person spec, and a concrete shortlisting plan — Band 5 through Band 8a.

MRI

MRI radiographers run multi-sequence scans across neuro, MSK, cardiac and body imaging using 1.5T and 3T systems.

CT

CT radiographers deliver high-throughput cross-sectional imaging for trauma, stroke, oncology and interventional workups.

Ultrasound

Sonographers autonomously scan and report across obstetric, gynae, abdominal, MSK and vascular ultrasound.

General radiography

General/plain-film radiographers cover A&E, theatres, wards and outpatients — the largest part of the diagnostic workforce.

Interventional

Interventional radiographers support image-guided procedures — angiography, embolisation, biliary, vascular and neuro-interventional.

Nuclear medicine

Nuclear medicine practitioners deliver SPECT, SPECT/CT and PET/CT imaging using radiopharmaceuticals.

Mammography

Mammographers deliver symptomatic and screening breast imaging within the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP).

Radiotherapy

Therapeutic radiographers plan and deliver radiotherapy treatments across linac, brachytherapy and on-treatment review.
